Love, Thunder and Mischief

My Bachelor Thesis

The Project

For my last and most important work during my studies it was important to me to find a topic that allows me to combine my interests and my skills, but which also challenges me.

Since my childhood I was a big Marvel fan and grew up with the movies of the Marvel universe. Due to the ever-growing spectrum of Marvel’s superheroes, I now have many favorite characters. However, my favorite is and remains Thor.

Not only in the Marvel comics and the Marvel movies is Thor the God of Thunder, but also in Norse mythology.  Fascinated by all the connections and differences, I decided to examine Thor’s various facets in my theory section.

In this I noted the character development of Thor over time. In the last installment of the Thor film series so far, Thor: Love and Thunder, the role of fatherhood falls into Thor’s hands, and this new dynamic between Thor and his adopted daughter inspired me to create a 2D short film that ties into the end of that film.

Following on from the 4th part of Thor, the characters Thor and his adopted daughter Love were therefore already given.

But to build an exciting story some important elements were still missing. Since Thor in Marvel has a very ambivalent relationship with his brother Loki I wanted to develop a counterpart for Love. In the process, I developed Kari. The daughter of Loki, the god of mischief. And it was exactly this quality that rubbed off on Kari. Like her father, she can change her shape and takes great pleasure in teasing others.

Love is an eight-year-old girl in „Thor: Love and Thunder“. But for my short film I decided to portray the two daughters in a teenage age. Since they both grow up together, they are like sisters to one another.

Story Development

The story was hard to pin down at first. I had many ideas but most of them were too „normal“. Like Marvel, I wanted to focus on the superhero aspect, and since I have a younger sister and know what the relationship between two teenage girls can be like, I was sure I wanted to build the story around a competition between the two. But since a competition alone isn’t enough to tell an exciting story, I still needed a moral.  As with Thor and Loki, there is a lot of trouble between the two. However, when it comes down to it, they are still there for each other.

I chose a total of three obstacles to bring the moral: Together we are strong, clearly to light. At the first obstacle, Kari lets Love down. At the second obstacle, Love doesn’t pay attention to what’s happening to Kari. Each one thinks only of herself. And at the third obstacle, Love initially jumps to safety but when she realizes Kari needs her, she comes to her rescue. Kari does the same. With the goal of winning in mind, she keeps running, but her compassion causes her to turn back to help Love. This is to show that the other is much more important to both of them than winning, even if it was hard for them at first.

In the beginning, Thor seems to be the bad guy who only wants bad things for the two of them. But in the end it becomes clear that he is doing all this just to bring the two together.
